Ta'er Monastery is the center of Tibetan Buddhism activities in the northwest region of China. It enjoys a high reputation in China and Southeast Asia. Successive central governments have attached great importance to its religious status. Also known as Kumbum Monastery, it was built in the tenth year of the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty (1377). Its name is derived from the Great Silver Pagoda built in the Golden Roof Monastery to commemorate Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gelug school. In Tibetan, it is called 'Gonben Xianbalin,' meaning 'Maitreya Monastery of the Ten Thousand Roaring Lions Buddha.' Besides the three unique features of the monastery—statues of Avalokitesvara, figures, and patterns—don't forget the three other unique features inside the monastery: butter sculptures, murals, and embroidery. The murals are vivid and lifelike, belonging to the Tibetan Buddhist painting school. They are painted on cloth, walls, and pillars, with many storylines taken from Buddhist scriptures, making them lifelike and exquisite. The embroidery is a unique Tibetan art form created by Ta'er Monastery. Various colored fabrics are cut into designed shapes, carefully layered and pasted to form complete pictures, and finally embroidered with colored threads. The themes of the embroidery often come from Buddhist stories and religious life, making them very vivid and artistically appealing.
