Introduction

Nanchan Temple, also known as Nanshan Temple, located at the foot of Phoenix Mountain in the north of Xining City, southwest China, is one of the oldest surviving Han Chinese Buddhist temples (Jingtu Sect) in Qinghai province. The temple, centered around a Guandi Temple, is built layer by layer along the mountain with a rigorous and orderly layout, which is known as a model of Chinese temple architecture. In history, Nanchan Temple was a thriving center of Buddhism with countless Buddhists, but it suffered from destruction caused by wars and natural disasters, and went through several reconstructions to be preserved today. Most of the ancient buildings that can still be seen were remnants of the Qing Dynasty reconstruction, making it one of the well-preserved ancient architectural complexes in Xining City. Nanchan Temple is also an important place for Han Chinese Buddhist believers to conduct religious activities.
