Introduction

Shigatse Gyantse Ancient Town is located upstream of the Nyang Chu River, about 90 kilometers from Shigatse City. It is a historic ancient town with a long history and numerous cultural relics. After the collapse of the Tubo Kingdom (7th-9th century AD), Gyantse became a place where warlords ruled and the Panchen Lama once resided here. Originally named "Jiekaerji", abbreviated as "Jiezi", it gradually became known as "Jiangzi". During the Yuan Dynasty (1206-1368), Gyantse built the Baiju Temple, which attracted many followers to come and worship. At the same time, Gyantse's geographical location was advantageous, making it a transportation hub and commercial center, and thus it became the third-largest city in Tibet's history.
