Introduction

The landmark building in Thimphu, Bhutan was constructed according to the vision of the third king of Bhutan, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck (the father of modern Bhutan). Although the stupa was completed in 1974, unfortunately the king passed away before its completion. The building serves as a memorial for the king and a monument for world peace, as well as the center of the daily circumambulation for the people of Thimphu. According to locals, circumambulating the stupa can redeem one's past sins. The national monument is also a stupa that houses many sacred religious paintings and tantric Buddhist statues. While the large golden-tipped building does not contain the third king's remains, people can admire his portrait there. In the wind, the bells hanging on the monument ring out, while devout worshippers snake around its base in long lines. It is said that many members of the royal family and religious leaders also come to visit this site.
