Introduction
Manikarnika Ghat is one of the ancient river ghats in Varanasi, India. It is one of the holiest cremation grounds in Hinduism, where many Indians come to perform cremation rituals and scatter the ashes in the Ganges River, hoping for liberation. It is said that a well by the riverbank was dug by Lord Vishnu to appease Lord Shiva, requesting him not to destroy this sacred city during the end of the world. Legend has it that when Lord Shiva was bathing here, his earring fell into this well. Hence, the ghat is named Manikarnika, which means "earring" in Hindi.
