Introduction

Fatehpur Sikri was briefly the capital of the Mughal Empire from 1571 to 1585 and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. The palace was built by Akbar the Great in gratitude to the saint Sheikh Salim Chishti and named after him. However, it was abandoned just 14 years later due to water scarcity. Despite being overshadowed by the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, it is worth a visit. On the southwest side of the palace is a magnificent mosque with a large square and a central pool. To the left of the square are interior halls similar to the Jama Masjid in Delhi. On the north side of the palace are the residences of Akbar's wives, representing Hindu, Muslim, and Christian architectural styles, with the Hindu wife's residence being the largest. The central large pool within the palace was where the king enjoyed musical and dance performances, and his own chambers were located behind the pool. The palace also has a hall for public and private meetings. Nearby is the white marble mausoleum of Sheikh Salim Chishti, a Muslim saint, which can be visited to make wishes.

Transportation
About 40 kilometers away from Agra, take a public bus from Idgah Bus Stand station for 40 rupees per person, approximately one hour ride. The bus stops at a parking lot next to the Fatehpur Sikri local market, about a 5-10 minute walk to the attraction. The return bus also departs from here. After getting off the bus, look up to see the grand entrance of the mosque, continue walking through the market, passing by a clock tower, and turn right at the second intersection to climb uphill. This is the quickest route to the mosque and palace, but if unsure, it's recommended to ask the vendors in the market for directions.
