Introduction
The 15th-century palace is only partially open to the public, and the Golden Gate is an iconic building in Durbar Square. The copper carvings surrounding the Golden Gate include the goddess Taleju, Vishnu, the golden-winged Garuda, and the elephant god Ganesh, considered one of the finest metal artworks in the Kathmandu Valley. To the east of the Golden Gate is the Fifty-Five Window Palace, built by the king for the royal women who were not allowed to go out alone, allowing them to overlook the scenery outside through the windows. These windows are regarded as some of the most beautiful wooden carving artworks in the Kathmandu Valley. To the west of the Golden Gate is the National Gallery, with stone lions on each side of the entrance, as well as statues of the monkey god Hanuman and the human-lion Narsingha. The National Gallery displays a large collection of Hindu and Buddhist paintings, as well as early hand-copied scriptures. Address Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Bhaktapur 44800, Nepal
