Introduction

Nyatapola Temple, the tallest Hindu temple in Nepal, is a must-visit landmark in Durbar Square with a history dating back to the 15th century. Built in 1702, the temple is one of the representatives of the Newar-style temple architecture in Nepal and is dedicated to the goddess Lakshmi. The unique structure of Nyatapola Temple consists of five roofs and five levels of pedestals. On the stone steps of the pedestals, facing the square, there are stone carvings of wrestlers, elephants, lions, griffins, and goddesses. Even during the 1934 earthquake, this sturdy temple only suffered minor damage. There is also the famous Cafe Nyatapola nearby, where you can enjoy a cup of coffee while admiring the scenic views of the square.
