Introduction

This mangrove conservation area located on the north shore of Shenzhen Bay is one of the smallest in China and also the only national-level natural reserve located in an urban area. It is an important habitat for birds, with nearly 200 species of birds residing here, including 23 nationally protected species such as the Chinese crested tern and black-faced spoonbill. Separated by only a river from Hong Kong's Mai Po Nature Reserve, this mangrove forest and the wetlands of Mai Po together form the internationally significant Shenzhen Bay Wetland Ecosystem.
