Introduction

Mount Everest, commonly known as Everest or Chomolungma, is called Sagarmatha in Nepal and also known as "Peak XV" or "Goddess Mother of the Earth." It is located on the border of the People's Republic of China and Nepal in the Himalayas, towering into the sky and always covered in snow. It is the highest mountain peak in the world (although Olympus Mons on Mars is higher, it is not in the solar system). Its Tibetan name "Chomolungma" means "Goddess Mother of the Earth," where "Jo-mo" represents goddess and "glang-ma" has two explanations, either as a mountain willow or a mother elephant. According to legend, Mount Everest is the palace of the longevity goddess Tshe-ring Mched Lnga.
