Introduction

Near Man Mandir Ghat, there is a Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva which is considered one of the most famous temples in India. With a history of about 3500 years, the temple has been through several reconstructions. The rulers of the Lahore kingdom once donated 800 kilograms of gold to gild the tower of the temple which stands over ten meters tall, hence it is also known as the Golden Temple. The temple is only open to female Hindus and non-Hindus, and visitors must bring their passports and cash. There are heavy security forces guarding the entrance. To allow more people to come and worship, Indians have built a replica of the Shiva temple in Banaras Hindu University. Except for the missing gilded tower, every detail of the new temple is the same as the Golden Temple. Tourists can visit and worship the new temple without paying an admission fee.
