You must rent a car, preferably one with navigation. Your phone has no signal in some places and cannot provide navigation in a timely manner.

Not renting is also fine, I used BMW's built-in navigation, but I felt it wasn't as good as the rental car in Japan. It couldn't search for destinations by phone number, and it cost 70 pounds for 4 days, what a rip-off!
