Longxing Temple was originally the Longteng Garden of Murong Xi, the ruler of Later Yan during the Sixteen Kingdoms period of the Eastern Jin Dynasty. In the sixth year of Emperor Wen of Sui's reign (586 AD), a temple was built within the garden and it was then known as Longzang Temple. It was later renamed Longxing Temple during the Tang Dynasty.

The southern gate still bears the stone inscription "Three Heroes of the North," and Zhengding is the hometown of the famous general Zhao Zilong from the Three Kingdoms period.
