Introduction

Cape Foulwind Seal Colony is a year-round seal-viewing spot. It takes a ten-minute walk along a flat path to reach the spacious lookout, which is easily accessible to wheelchair users. The signs on the lookout explain the habitat and breeding cycle of the seals, as well as the history of the banned seal hunting industry in New Zealand. The name Cape Foulwind was given by Captain James Cook, who encountered severe weather here in 1770. But now the situation is quite the opposite, with a moderate climate and calm seas, making it a delightful place to spend several hours enjoying the adorable seals.
