Introduction
Located on the banks of the Swan River in South Perth, the Old Mill is one of Perth's most unique historical landmarks. Built in 1835 by William Shenton for grinding flour, the mill is made of stone and has a simple yet sturdy design with its exterior plastered with lime and limestone powder. Once a vital tool for early settlers in making flour, the mill ceased its flour grinding function in 1859. Since then, it has been used for various purposes such as picnicking, residential, wine salon, and poultry farm. In order to protect this heritage site, the government declared it a recreational reserve in 1932. In 1957, it was leased to a private company and restored to serve as an antique collection. Through the Old Mill, one can get a glimpse into the living conditions of early settlers and explore the footsteps of Perth's rich history.
