Introduction

Atherton town is located at the intersection of National Highway 1 and Kennedy Hwy in northern Queensland, near the famous Atherton Tablelands. As of 2006, the town had a population of approximately 7,000 people and is only 80 kilometers away from Cairns. In the late 19th century, large amounts of gold and tin were discovered in the surrounding area of Cairns, attracting a significant number of European and Chinese immigrants to North Queensland. Since 1903, Australia's largest Chinatown formed in Atherton, known as Cedar Camp. The famous Hou Wang Temple was the only building there and was worshipped until the 1970s.
