Introduction

The Virginia State Capitol, designed by the third President of the United States and architect Thomas Jefferson, was built in 1788 and is the oldest legislative body in the Western Hemisphere. Jefferson's use of precise proportions in the neoclassical style gives the building a sense of rigor and beauty. In the early 20th century, two wings were added to the Capitol, creating its current appearance. In 1960, the building was designated a National Historic Landmark, underscoring its significance and historical value.
