Introduction
The Honolulu Zoo in Queen Kapiolani Park is the only zoo in the United States that was founded by a sovereign monarch. It covers approximately 42 acres (17 hectares) and is part of the larger 300-acre (121-hectare) royal Kapiolani Park. The zoo is home to over 1,230 species of animals and attracts over six hundred thousand visitors annually.
However, during the Great Depression, the Honolulu Zoo faced financial difficulties and was nearly forced to close. But in 1974, the zoo received donations of animals such as camels, elephants, gorillas, and reindeer, which helped boost its confidence and provide an opportunity for revival.
