Introduction

Next to this ancient church stands a striking bronze statue, which is the iconic statue of Adam Mickiewicz, the pioneer of Polish Romantic literature. Like another famous Polish literary genius, Henryk Sienkiewicz, Mickiewicz lived and created during the time of Poland's partition, dedicating his life to the Polish national revival movement. He also received high praise from the Chinese literary giant Lu Xun, who said, "He is the poet of the era when Poland was under foreign oppression, advocating revenge and seeking liberation."
