Miami Beach is a coastal resort city located in Miami-Dade County, Florida, USA. Founded on March 26, 1915, Miami Beach is situated on a natural and man-made barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bay, which separates it from Miami. The South Beach area of the city covers an area of 2.5 square miles and is known as the commercial center of South Florida, along with downtown Miami and the Port of Miami. According to the 2010 census, the total population of Miami Beach is 87,779. It has been a popular beach resort destination in the United States since the early 20th century. In 1979, the Art Deco Historic District of Miami Beach was added to the National Register of Historic Places. It is the largest collection of Art Deco architecture in the world, including hundreds of hotels, apartments, and other buildings built between 1923 and 1943. The district features Mediterranean Revival architecture, Streamline Moderne architecture, and Art Deco architecture. The boundaries of the district are the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Lenox Court to the west, 6th Street to the south, and Dade Boulevard along the Collins Canal to the north. The leader of this movement was the former interior designer Barbara Capitman, who has a street named after her in the historic district. Address Miami Beach, Florida, United States
