Introduction

In order to resist attacks from the Slavic people, the Danish king built the Nipa Castle at the end of the 12th century. Nipa Castle, the Tårnburg Castle (located near the town of Koso), and the castle on Sprogø Island together form the defensive works of the Great Belt region. Soon, Nipa Castle became an important political site, where many important meetings of the Danish parliament were held. Today, only the west wing and the part of the giant tower facing east have remained.
