Introduction
The San Thome Basilica is a Roman Catholic cathedral located in Chennai, India. It is the principal church of the Archdiocese of Madras and Mylapore. This Gothic-style church was originally built by Portuguese explorers in the 16th century and later reconstructed by British architects in 1893. Saint Thomas is believed to have been one of the twelve apostles of Jesus and arrived in Kerala from Israel in 52 AD. He was martyred on Saint Thomas Mount in Chennai in 72 AD. There are only three churches of this kind in the world: St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican and the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral in Spain.
