Introduction
This small museum is located in the suburbs of Tokyo. It has only two floors but, like the historic sites in Kyoto and Nara during World War II, it was designated as a target to be avoided during bombings. Its collection includes over 17,000 pieces, including dyed textiles, paintings, sculptures, and tools, all of which are masterpieces by unknown craftsmen in art history. These artworks were collected personally by the founder Soetsu Yanagi and his successors from various regions of Japan and even overseas, showcasing the essence of the folk craft movement.
Archaeologist Kazumi Sakata has selected 22 of these precious pieces, accompanied by full-color detailed photos and commentary. At the same time, he, together with the advisor to the folk craft museum, Shozo Ogusu, and the designer Nobu Yamaguchi, has traced the history of these artworks and explored the future and destiny of folk craft and folk craft museums at a crossroads in time. Opening hours Closed on Mondays from 10:00 to 17:00.
