Introduction

In the famous GUM Department Store next to Red Square, there is a paid public toilet claimed to be the most luxurious in the world. It was built in the late Russian Empire, constructed with marble and granite. It has dedicated attendants, using the latest British-made toilets and providing perfume for guests. There is a wardrobe at the entrance for users to store their coats. During the Soviet era, this toilet was banned for being too capitalist and was used as a warehouse. Although it was reopened later, the marble walls were covered with cement and the British toilets were replaced with domestic ceramic products. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, with extensive renovation, GUM department store regained its former glory and the luxurious toilet became visible again.
