Introduction

Gokokuji Temple is located in Otsuma 5-chome, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, Japan. It is a temple of the Shingon sect Toyoyama school, founded by Katsura Shoin, the mother of Tokugawa Yoshinori. In 1873, the eastern part of Gokokuji Temple was designated as the imperial family's burial ground to commemorate the death of the Prince of Emperor Meiji. Gokokuji Temple is also the head temple of tea ceremony, and Okuma Shigenobu, a statesman of the Meiji Restoration and the founder of Waseda University, once practiced meditation in this area.
