Introduction

The eastern area of Durbar Square is the oldest palace among the three major palace squares in Kathmandu, built in the 14th century. Despite the damages caused by wars and earthquakes in 1768 and 1934, it remains one of the most important architectural sites in the Kathmandu Valley. The palace consists of three main courtyards, with the northernmost being the Keshav Narayan courtyard, with the entrance through the magnificent Golden Gate. Inside the palace, you can visit the Patan Museum, which showcases many ancient Hindu and Buddhist statues. The ticket fee is 250 rupees, with a discounted price of 150 rupees for Chinese passport holders. If you only want to explore the ground floor, entry is free. The central Mul courtyard and the smaller Sundari courtyard in the south are not open to the public, but you can visit the Hanuman and Ganesha statues surrounding them. Many locals gather outside the palace walls every day for leisurely chats. The eastern area of Durbar Square is a historically rich area where you can experience its historical and cultural atmosphere.
