Introduction

Itum Bahal is one of the oldest temples in the old city area of Kathmandu and is a peaceful place in the city. In the center, there is a small white stupa surrounded by rectangular structures. To the west is the Kichandra temple, one of the oldest temples in the city, dating back to 1381. The stupa in front of the temple entrance has been completely destroyed by the central Bodhi tree, and in autumn and winter, the temple is filled with grains, making it very picturesque. Inside the Kichandra temple, there is a pagoda-shaped central sanctuary, and to the south is a small stupa adorned with an exquisite bodhisattva statue. On the north courtyard wall of the temple, there are four brass decorative plates, with the leftmost one depicting Guru Mapa demon taking food from a misbehaving child, so people worship it with buffalo meat every year. This story serves as a warning for young people and is suitable for being located next to the temple and a primary school. Even today, during the Holi festival, the residents of the temple slaughter a buffalo on the banks of the Vishnumati River as an offering to Guru Mapa. In the afternoon, people cook the beef in the temple and at midnight, they pack the beef into a large pot and move it under a tree in Durbar Square, where it is believed the demon resides. Inside the Kichandra temple, there are also beautiful carvings of wooden brackets and mountain-shaped door lintels, and on either side of the main gate stand pairs of bronze and stone lions, which are amazing to behold.
