Introduction

Ghasaunda Temple, also known as the "One Tree Temple", was located in the southwest corner of Kathmandu's Durbar Square. Although it was considered less prominent among the many ancient temples, it became a must-visit attraction due to the belief that the name "Kathmandu" originated from "Ghasaunda". Most people believe that the temple, with its unique triple-tiered roof, was built in the 12th century using a single Sal tree, hence its nickname. Originally, it served as a gathering place for the community before important ceremonies and later became a temple dedicated to the ascetic Gorakhnath. Unfortunately, it was severely damaged and completely collapsed during the 8.1 magnitude earthquake on April 25, 2015.
