Introduction

Tashilhunpo Monastery is known as the "Three Artistic Wonders", which include butter sculptures, murals, and embroidery. Butter sculptures are a special craft made by the monks in the monastery using colored butter. They come in various forms and depict a wide range of subjects. According to the belief of Tibetan people, offering butter sculptures to the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and protectors can bring relief from disasters, blessings, happiness, and great merits, and also accelerate the path of spiritual cultivation. Since 1409, Tashilhunpo Monastery has held a grand butter sculpture exhibition every year on the 15th day of the first lunar month, continuing this tradition to the present day.
