Introduction

Famen Temple, which began construction during the Eastern Han Dynasty and later became a royal temple in the Tang Dynasty, is revered as a Buddhist holy site due to the presence of a finger bone relic of the Buddha. Legend has it that to spread Buddhism more widely, the Buddha's relic was distributed to various places, and stupas were subsequently constructed to enshrine them. Famen Temple is one such stupa. Today, Famen Temple is divided into the ancient Tang-style architectural complex (Famen Temple and the Treasures Museum) and the controversial new cultural scenic area. Relics unearthed from the underground palace include the eight-fold precious casket that houses the relic and a twelve-ring silver staff, reflecting the extreme wealth of the Tang Empire and the royal family's devout reverence for Buddhism.
