Introduction
In the mid-19th century, many Westerners left Europe and America to work and live on Gulangyu Island. Most of the foreigners who came to Gulangyu were devout Christians. In order to hold worship ceremonies, they decided to build a church on Gulangyu. Therefore, believers from various churches, such as the American Congregational Church, the London Mission Society, and the British Presbyterian Church, donated money to build the church on Deer Reef (also known as Upper Deer Reef) on Gulangyu. In 1863, the neoclassical-style church was completed, then known as the "International Church." This was the earliest church on Gulangyu.
