Dazhi Zen Temple, A Serene Sanctuary with a Majestic Buddha

Introduction

Dazhi Zen Temple can be traced back to the Southern Liang Dynasty (502-557 AD) and has a history of more than 1500 years. After many renovations, the temple now houses the tallest indoor statue of Sakyamuni Buddha in China. The whole temple is secluded and ancient, like a fairyland. Although the courtyard is not large, it has many buildings, including the Heavenly King Hall, the Great Buddha Hall, the Medicine Buddha Hall, the Ksitigarbha Hall, the Arhat Hall, and the Bell and Drum Tower. The Great Buddha Hall is the main hall, with a magnificent gold-plated statue of Sakyamuni Buddha, the largest indoor Buddha statue in China. On both sides of the Buddha are Manjusri and Samantabhadra Bodhisattvas, twenty-four celestial beings on each side, and the back hall even has Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva and its one hundred and fifty-six incarnations. In addition, the deep relief woodcarving of the Five Hundred Arhats by Dongyang is also very exquisite. It is also worth mentioning that Dazhi Zen Temple is one of the shooting bases for martial arts films in Hengdian World Studios. Perhaps when you visit, you will get lucky and witness a movie being filmed.
