Introduction

Located 9 kilometers northeast of Hancheng city and only 3 kilometers away from the Yellow River, Dangjia Village is the best-preserved Ming and Qing Dynasty village in China, known as the "living fossil of the Eastern ancient village". Dangjia Village has a history of over 660 years. In the second year of the Yuanzhi Shun era (1331), Dang Shuxuan settled here and made a living through farming. During the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty, his grandson Dang Zhen passed the imperial examination and developed a village and fortress construction plan. During the Chenghua period of the Ming Dynasty, the Dang and Jia families intermarried and established the "Hexingfa" business, doing business in the Zhumadian area of Henan province, with prosperous business connections to Hankou and Foshan. According to family records, at that time the village was known for "daily income of a thousand taels of silver" and was wealthy. In the eighth year of the Ming Dynasty, Jia Zhang, who was Dang's nephew, moved to Dangjia Village, and the two families were connected by marriage. With abundant wealth, the courtyard buildings reached their heyday in the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties. In the Xianfeng period of the Qing Dynasty (1851), due to banditry, a fortress called Miyang was built with a collection of 18,000 taels of silver, merging the village and the fortress into one.
