Introduction

Xigu Castle is located in the famous historical and cultural town of Nuanquan, and it is a typical "castle within a castle." Xigu Castle was built in the Jin Dynasty, with a moat at the gate. It took its current form during the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty, and was expanded and renovated in the late Qing Dynasty. It is one of the best preserved ancient village castles in China, and was named "Home of Ancient Folk Customs" by the Hebei Federation of Literary and Art Circles in 2003. The castle combines ancient castles with ancient opera houses, temples, and residences. Although it is small in scale, it is ingeniously designed and represents the essence of the castle, with a strong Ming and Qing architectural style. The layout of the moat in Xigu Castle is flexible and changeable, with a meticulous and complex structure, and the halls and pavilions are scattered and hidden within the landscape, showcasing the superb artistic design skills of the craftsmen of that time.
