Introduction
Ryouzenji Temple is located in the city of Naruto in Tokushima Prefecture, Japan. It is the starting point of the Shikoku Pilgrimage and the first temple of the 88 Sacred Places of Shikoku, earning it the nickname "Temple of Vows." The temple was originally built in the Nara period and has since been rebuilt multiple times due to fires. The main hall and many other buildings, including the pagoda, were completely destroyed and rebuilt in modern times. Ryouzenji Temple occupies a large area and is surrounded by lush trees, offering beautiful scenery. The great master Kukai practiced here for 21 days. The rebuilt main hall is still designated as a national treasure, and the three-storied pagoda, guardian shrine, and bell tower are also important cultural properties. The temple houses a rich collection of treasures, including precious Buddhist statues and wall paintings. One of the most famous attractions at Ryouzenji Temple is the Rose Garden, especially during the summer and autumn when the roses are in full bloom, attracting a large number of tourists. Another famous feature of Ryouzenji Temple is the Yakushi-yu hot spring, which is known for its healing properties for shoulder inflammation and fatigue recovery. Legend has it that Empress Komyo also visited and bathed in this hot spring. Over time, Ryouzenji Temple has become an important cultural heritage site, attracting many visitors and pilgrims. Opening hours The main hall is open from 10:00 to 16:00, the rose garden is open from 8:00 to 17:00, and the medicine master temple is open from 9:00 to 19:00.
Transportation Exit JR Bandō Station and walk for about 10 minutes; take the Tokushima bus and get off at the Ryozenji-mae stop, then walk for about 1 minute.
