Introduction

Jeju Island is known as the "Island of Myths" because it has inherited over 18,000 mythological stories. Samseonghyeol, located near the Folklore and Natural History Museum, is the birthplace of Jeju mythology. According to Jeju legend, the ancestors of three different surnames - "Go Gyona," "Yang Gyona," and "Bu Gyona" - gathered here and married three princesses from the Kingdom of Biryang, producing descendants. This myth is deeply ingrained in the hearts of the people of Jeju and serves as their spiritual pillar. Today, out of over 500,000 people living on Jeju Island, the surnames Go, Yang, and Bu are the majority. Every spring and autumn, a festival is held at Samseonghyeol to commemorate this myth. Therefore, Samseonghyeol has also become a famous tourist attraction. The attractions in Samseonghyeol include the Samseong Temple, the Daeje Shrine, the Chungbo Hall, the Exhibition Hall, the Yanhun Port, the Marriage Site, the Archery Longwokeok Peak, the Screening Room, and the Three Shooting Stones. Among them, the Samseong Temple is a temple that houses the ancestral tablets of the three Gyona from the Dolmen Kingdom that was established over 4,300 years ago. It was first built in the 24th year of King Sukjong of the Joseon Dynasty (1698) and has undergone multiple renovations. The Daeje Shrine is the place where the main worship ceremonies take place and has been relocated and renovated multiple times since its construction in the 27th year of King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty (1827). The Chungbo Hall is a retreat built in the 15th year of King Heonjong of the Joseon Dynasty (1849) for outstanding scholars to gather and study. Samseonghyeol not only has a historical and cultural significance with regards to Jeju mythology but is also an important place for the people of Jeju to pray for good luck and happiness.
