Introduction

Head to the southern cliffs of the Kau region on the island of Hawaii, and look up at the vast Pacific Ocean, and you will be amazed: there is only a deep blue sea separating here from Antarctica. Kalae, also known as South Point or "Ka Lae," is the southernmost point in the United States. As early as between 400 and 800 AD, Polynesian voyagers of descent were landing here. Now, you can see temple ruins, fishing shrines, and other cultural remnants, which is why the entire southern tip is considered a national historic landmark.
