Introduction

Mud Volcano is one of the four major geothermal features in Yellowstone National Park. It was first discovered by two exploration teams led by Washburn and Hayden in the 1870s. According to their reports, it made a booming sound that could be heard several miles away. At that time, the intermittent springs would erupt with mud, creating a spectacular sight. However, the springs gradually became calm and ceased to erupt, but still exhibited geothermal phenomena such as hot springs, mud pots, and fumaroles. In fact, the Mud Volcano is only a term used to describe geothermal phenomena formed by hot water, mud, and steam, and has nothing to do with actual volcanic magma.
