Introduction

The Maba Man Site, located in Shixing County, Shaoguan City, Guangdong Province, is comprised of two limestone peaks from the Carboniferous period. It is located 18 kilometers from downtown Shaoguan and 1.5 kilometers southwest of the county seat of Qujiang. The caves within the mountains are interconnected, with clear and clean water and permanent bottom water. The discovery of Maba Man has greatly helped to study the activities of ancient humans in the region, the geographic climate and ecological environment during that time. Therefore, it provides important physical materials for us to further explore human evolution and development. In 1961, Maba Man Site was announced as a cultural relic protection unit in Guangdong Province. In 1958, human skull fossils were found in a crevice in the second layer cave on the north side of Shizi Mountain, and after bonding, experts confirmed that it was an early type of human fossil, most likely a transitional fossil from erect man to Homo sapiens.
