Introduction

Liurong Temple is a famous ancient temple in Guangzhou with a long history and numerous cultural relics. The Liurong Flower Pagoda is a highlight of the temple, which was recognized as a tourist attraction in Guangzhou in 1997. During the Southern Song Dynasty (420-479 AD), there was already a Buddhist temple called Guangzhou Baozhuangyan Temple on the site where Liurong Temple stands today. The monk Tanyu, who stayed at Baozhuangyan Temple due to illness, built a reliquary pagoda and stored Buddhist relics obtained from overseas. In the first year of Yonghui in the Tang Dynasty (650 AD), auspicious signs appeared at the reliquary pagoda, so the monks and believers in the temple rebuilt the pagoda. The renowned poet Wang Bo passed by this place and recorded its history and construction process on a stele. On the east side of the flower pagoda, there are the mountain gate, Maitreya Hall, Heavenly King Hall, and Vaisravana Hall, as well as more than ten ancient steles, including a stone inscription with Liurong. The main hall of the temple, known as the Great Hall of the Mahavira, houses three large bronze Buddha statues cast in the second year of Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty (1663 AD), making them the largest ancient bronze statues in Guangdong Province. The temple also includes buildings such as the Dharma Hall, the Hall of the Sixth Patriarch, the Avalokiteshvara Hall, the monk's dining hall, the Hall of Merit, and the Scripture Depository.
