Introduction

The Kukulkan Pyramid was built around 800 BC with the purpose of calculating time based on the Mayan calendar. The entire pyramid was built with stone and each side has 91 steps, adding up to the temple platform equals 365 days—the length of a solar year. The pyramid's terraces are divided into two parts, with a total of 18 terraces representing the 18 months of the Mayan calendar. The pyramid has 52 stone slabs, representing a 52-year cycle which marks the intersection of the solar and religious calendars. The most amazing feature is that during the equinoxes, the sunlight creates triangles on the North stairs, resembling a snake crawling up the steps.
