A visit to Guidefu City - the ancient capital Shangqiu (Part One)

Also known as Guideng Fu City, it was built during the Zhengde period of the Ming Dynasty and is located in Suixian District, Shangqiu City. Its city walls, moats, and inner city are well preserved, making it a rare ancient city in the country. The brick city is rectangular, 1200 meters long from north to south, and 1000 meters long from east to west. There are currently four arch bridges and seven horse-face bridges, as well as four walls. Unfortunately, the original four urn-shaped cities could not be preserved.

Arch of Triumph

The north gate of Shangqiu Ancient City is named Gongchen Gate. It is well preserved and visitors can now stand on the city wall to appreciate the historical and cultural heritage of the city.

Marquis's Mansion

The Hou Family Residence includes the former residence of Hou Xun and Zhuanghuitang, the protagonist of the novel "The Peach Blossom Fan". The former residence of Hou Xun has three courtyards with buildings such as the main hall, east and west wing rooms, etc. The remnants can also be found in the east and west courtyards, all of which were built in the late Ming Dynasty and have a simple and elegant style. The main hall consists of the main building, east and west side buildings, a corridor, east and west wing rooms, and a main gate, forming a typical two-in-four courtyard layout, representing the architectural style of the late Ming Dynasty official residence. In fact, the Hou Family Residence is just a group of modern replica buildings, and only the love story of Hou Fangyu and Li Xiangjun, one of the "Eight Beauties of Qinhuai", can evoke people's thoughts.
Confucian Temple in Guidefu, was first built during the Yuan Dynasty. It consists of the Dacheng Hall, Minglun Hall, and Panchi, making it the largest existing Confucian temple in Henan Province. The thousand-year-old Chinese soapberry tree to the east of the Dacheng Hall is also a major attraction in the temple. The trunk is almost hollow, but the crown is still verdant. It is said that Zhao Kuangyin, the founder of the Song Dynasty, once tied his horse to this tree, hence the name "Zhao Kuangyin Ties Horse Tree".

Shangqiu Art Museum

Mu's Quadrangle, originally a complex of three courtyards and five gates in the Qing Dynasty, now only the central courtyard and the main hall remain. It is the location of the Shangqiu Art Museum, but there are no exhibits except for some textual display boards. The attraction is relatively hidden, located at the intersection of Guide Mansion and Confucius Temple, near the entrance of Suiyang Hotel.

Catholic Church

The Catholic Church, a red-roofed European-style church, is said to have been built by the Spanish in 1924.
