The Blue Penny Museum is named after a rare and valuable two-penny blue stamp, one of two "Post Office" stamps carved by Joseph Osmond Barnard for the Mauritius Post Office in 1847. The museum exhibits a series of these stamps, as well as a collection of treasures, old maps, paintings, sculptures, stamps, engravings, and old documents. The Blue Penny stamp of Mauritius is famous, like the extinct dodo bird.
The museum is built on a historic site and operated by the Mauritius Commercial Bank. It opened to the public on November 27, 2001. The building of the museum is adjacent to the former site of the Mauritius Ports Authority, with the stone walls well-preserved, still clearly showing the construction date of 1930.
