Introduction

Director Peter Jackson filmed the epic battle scene of the Pelennor Fields in The Lord of the Rings near Twizel in the Mackenzie region, showcasing the fierce battle between thousands of Uruk-hai bred by Saruman and the forces of Rohan and Gondor. The vast grasslands here are reminiscent of the description in the novel. Though the Twizel tourist area is privately owned, visitors can still come and explore.

International flights can arrive at the closest airport - Christchurch Airport. It is also possible to take domestic flights from other major cities in New Zealand to Christchurch before driving to Twizel. Along State Highway 1, turn right onto State Highway 8 after Washdyke. There are daily long-distance buses from Christchurch to Twizel.
