Calle Cuenca 477 and Sucre, Quito

Introduction

Built in 1536, the church is only two years younger than the city of Quito. It has undergone 150 years of construction and witnessed changes in earthquakes and architectural trends. The exterior of the church is in the style of Mannerist architecture of the Renaissance period, while the interior is mainly Mudéjar and Baroque. The church's collection includes over 3,500 pieces of art of different styles, genres, and techniques. The most famous is the sculpture of the Quito Virgin on the main altar, created in the 18th century. For a long time, this statue has been regarded as a symbol of the city of Quito. The Plaza de San Francisco is in front of the church, where there are many white birds. You can purchase bird food to feed and take pictures with them if you are willing. There are souvenir shops facing the square, but the prices are quite high.
