Introduction

The Dunedin Botanic Garden, founded in 1863, is one of the oldest botanical gardens in New Zealand. Covering 28 hectares, it holds over 6800 plant species. The garden is particularly renowned for its variety of rhododendrons, and the beautiful Edwardian Winter Garden houses tropical, subtropical, cactus, and succulent plants, making it a highlight of low-altitude gardens. There is also a delightful herb garden, fragrant and diverse, and well-arranged rose and camellia gardens to amble through, taking in the stunning views of the gorge. The garden is also home to one of the largest natural rock gardens in the world, with rugged stone formations along the banks of the Lindsay Creek. In the native plant area, visitors can observe endangered plants, alpine and wetland plants, indigenous trees, and unique flax weaving displays. Alongside the various plant species on display, the garden boasts magnificent hillside scenery, well-tended lawns, aviaries, shops, and cafes, providing all the necessary amenities for a perfect trip. Situated in the north of Dunedin, the garden is two kilometers from the Octagon.
