Introduction

In Teotihuacan, east of Mexico City, there is an ancient road called the "Avenue of the Dead" (Calzada de los Muertos). This road is the backbone connecting the Sun Pyramid, Moon Pyramid, and many other buildings, with a total length of nearly four kilometers, and is the main road leading to the temple area in the archaeological zone. The name of this road derives from an experience of the Aztecs when they arrived in Teotihuacan in the 10th century. At that time, they found the entire city empty as they entered it along this road. They mistakenly thought that the buildings on both sides of the road were the tombs of gods, so they named it the "Avenue of the Dead". However, another theory suggests that people or animals who were once used as sacrifices were brought to the altars along this road. Regardless of which theory is true, this road carries the long and mysterious history of Teotihuacan and attracts many people who come to explore it.
