Introduction

The exact meaning of the Spanish name Las Monjas is "The Nuns" but in reality it's a complex of multiple palaces and residences. Some scholars believe that the building might have served as a residence of the Chi-Ik'in founding family or the local priests and was one of the political centers during the Mayan period. Five inscriptions were discovered inside the building, with one dating back to 880 AD. The entire building is built on a platform that is as high as 30 feet and consists of a central fortified wall and two side wings.
