Introduction

In Chichén Itzá, there are three cenotes, two of which are still present today, one of which is the Sacrificial Cenote. This sacrificial well is a breathtaking natural wonder, about 60 meters in diameter and 35 meters deep, built for sacrificing to the Mayan rain god, Chaac. During droughts, Mayans gathered around the sacrificial cenote for rituals, praying to the rain god for rain and throwing jade, pottery, incense, and other offerings into the well. Sometimes, they even sacrificed live humans. These cenotes provided a year-round source of water for the local people.
