Introduction

Lafayette No.1 Cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in the history of New Orleans, built in 1833 and located in the Garden District. It has been chosen as a filming location for many movies and TV dramas. Most of the early burials in the cemetery were European immigrants, mainly of German and Irish descent. The cemetery has witnessed the tumultuous history of New Orleans, including the yellow fever epidemic that took many lives in the 1840s and 1850s. It also houses some famous people, including Judge John Howard Ferguson, involved in the famous Plessy v. Ferguson case in American judicial history.
